COVID-19 Medications

Currently, there are sufficient medications available in Austria for the treatment of COVID-19. The COVID-19 drugs can mitigate the course of COVID-19 disease after an infection has already occurred. However, currently approved COVID-19 drugs cannot prevent infections. Thus, vaccination remains the best protection against disease.

Medications are an additional safety net, especially for people at increased risk for severe disease, such as the elderly and those with pre-existing conditions (for example, chronic disease, obesity, high blood pressure, or weakened immune systems).
It is important that COVID-19 medication is taken as soon as possible after a positive test result, even before symptoms appear.

In Austria, there are signs of a positive development in the use of COVID-19 medications, and we have become a role model for Germany here, where the dispensing of medications is to be optimized according to the Austrian model. This applies, for example, to e-prescriptions, messenger services and tele-information services.

Further information about COVID-19 medications can be found on the website of the Federal Ministry of Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection.
